Paris, France
September 17-21, 2004

We learned a lot about the art of fine living from the Parisians.

Our first morning in Paris, we awoke to a sweet buttery aroma rising up from the street below. Long before the sounds of trucks and cars could be heard, the bakers were busy making the croissants and pain au chocolates that fuel Parisians.

We stayed at the Hotel Royal Phare, located near the Rue Cler in the 7th arrondisemont, a convenient 5 meters from the Ecole Militaire metro stop. We stayed on the 5th & 6th floors in cozy and quiet rooms facing the courtyard, with views of the top of the Eiffel tower.

Rue Cler is a perfect place to gather a picnic. While somewhat expensive, the peaches and pears at the corner market were some of the best food we had in Europe.

"Free Museum Day?" We attempted to buy a museum pass as Rick Steves suggests, but the woman at the Tourist Information office said we didn't need one because the next two days were "Free Museum Days" at all Paris museums. Unfortunately, she was wrong. We had to stand in line to buy tickets for the Louvre, Rodin and Musee d'Orsay. Next time, we will trust our guidebook, as the pass is well worth it.

Life doesn’t get much better than a beautiful fall day surrounded by Rodin’s art and a lovely home.
