Overview

Our trip actually began in March 2004, when Dr. McCaa and I began a research project, which eventually was submitted and accepted to the XXII Congress of the European Socity of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons.

The conference itself was one of the best educational experiences that I've had during residency. An international meeting is an especially good opportunity because you tend to stick out as an American a little more than you would at a meeting in the States. I couldn't believe how many great contacts I made during the convention.

If you are interested in learning more about our research project, you can see the poster here. Otherwise, just keep reading along.

We also asked Jew-Lee's mother, Diane, to come with us to celebrate her upcoming 60th birthday.

This was Diane's second trip to Europe; however, this time around she travelled, as we do, with one carry-on size bag only.

Traveling light is the only way to go, and is easy if you know how to pack.

To prepare for the trip, we used the France 2004, Paris 2004, and Amsterdam, Brussels, and Bruges 2003 (see previous trip), from Rick Steves. We also reviewed our French using the Pimsleur Language tapes. Unfortunately, Pimsleur did not cover "flat tires".
