Most cells at Kilmainham Gaol were no bigger than a broom closet and in theory only held one person. During the famine years however, they held many more. At the beginning of the 20th century, the jail was reopened for political prisoners. For many inmates, this was the last stop in Ireland before deportation to the penal colonies in Australia.
